Assad Refuses Safe Zone Plans Trump in Syria
DAMASCUS - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad rejected the US plan that would create a "safe zone" in Syria, which claimed to protect refugees in the war-torn country and to stem the flow of refugees into other countries.
"This is not a realistic idea at all. This is where you can have a safe zone naturally, in our country. They do not need the safe zone at all, "Assad said in an interview with Yahoo News released on Friday.
He also added that "It's much more feasible, more practical and cheaper to have stability rather than creating a safe zone."
Assad further noted that a safe zone in Syria would be at risk of being attacked by extremist groups that sponsored the West to overthrow the Syrian government.
Meanwhile, the UN also rejected the safe zone and said the status quo in Syria does not allow for the creation of a safe zone in northern Syria.
Speaking in an interview with ABC News on January 25, Trump stated "really going to create a safe zone in Syria," without giving details.
Assad further stated that the Syrian government would welcome cooperation with Washington in its campaign against the terrorist group ISIS, only if the United States as a country respecting Syria's sovereignty, and taking "a clear political position" on the matter.
Syrian president also said US forces would be "greeted" in Syria to fight ISIS if Washington coordinate with Damascus, and recognizes the sovereignty of the Syrian government.
"If the Americans had good intentions, of course they are welcome. Unlike other countries, we want to beat and fight the terrorists, "Assad said.
"The troops are part of the same work ... (but) you can not talk about sending troops ... if you do not have a clear political position on terrorism, the sovereignty of Syria and the unity of Syria. Must go through the government of Syria, "Assad asserted.
Syrian president also warned that there are terrorists among the millions of Syrians who fled to European countries.
He said it was not to be preferred because it less likely they will commit violence, and stressed that the priority is "bringing Syrian refugees back to their country, do not ask them to emigrate."
